Chapter 22: The Rise and Fall of World Communism:
Russian Revolution (1917):
Definition: One of the main reasons for the start of the Russian Revolution was to withdraw and kick out Nicholas II out of the throne/power. And also to take out the Romanov dynasty that was imposed on them. Once the Russian Revolution ended it was declared that Russia was now communist. With the revolution a new type of power flourished and they were called the Bolsheviks.

Bolsheviks/Lenin:
Definition: A very important persuasive group that came started during the Russian Revolution in 1917. The Bolsheviks wanted a new government and they were influencing Russia to become a Communist country. Although this group surged and persuaded their ideas to Russia with acts of violence and superiority. Led by Vladimir also known as Lenin.

Guomindang:
Definition: This was the Chinese Communist Party's enemy because it opposed to communism. Guomindang was led by Chiang kai-shek. His organization/party was promoting the use of technology and tried to make China more modern.

Chinese Revolution:
Definition: This was a revolution that the communists won in 1949 and was placed into the Chinese government. Known as the Chinese Communist Party that was ruled much differently than the Russian communism. Peasant uprisings toward the land rulers was the major start of the Chinese Revolution.

Mao Zedong:
Definition: The leader of the Chinese Communist Party/Society. Mao was one of the reasons why China's Communist party was so successful. He was like the Hitler of China. People would name dynasty and things after him. He came from a lower class family. His uprisings began in the 1920's.

Building Socialism:
Definition: This was an idea of socialism which would help out the states by adding modern things and building a more ideal society. These end products were really close to the ones we have today. People had to work together to build up socialism.

Stalin:
Definition: Joseph Stalin was born in 1879 and died in 1953. He was the leader of the Soviet Union in Russia. He had alliances with Adolf Hitler from Germany. Stalin was part of the Soviet Union committee since 1922 and ended his membership when he died. He had great plans to revolutionize, industrialize and expand Russia.

Zhenotdel:
Definition: It was an organization that was just for women and was set up in 1919. It was known as the Women's Department which consisted of those women political leaders and also taught women how to run day cares and help out at medical clinics. It created a feminist agenda and was made by the Soviet Union/USSR.

Collectivization:
Definition: This was a type of process that would occur in China in the 1950's where the government would take up the crops from the peasants and people's farm to distribute the amount of food equally within the society. People liked the fact that everyone would have the same amount of food no matter how much food was produced.

Cultural Revolution:
Definition: This cultural revolution occurred in the 1960's and Mao Zedong created a campaign that would unite all of the Chinese Communists and tried to fight back against capitalism countries. This campaign was not as successful as it was expected but it eventually brought new rules and policies to help out China.

Great Purges/Terror:
Definition: A time of horror and bloody terror for the people of the Soviet Union. People created great purges to try to clean and get rid of the people that were bad that pertained to the Soviet Union. During the time this was happening many people died and were executed thinking that they were enemies.

Cuban Missile Crisis:
Definition: A fight against the US and the USSR to create nuclear weapons in 1962. The US wanted to invade Cuba with the nuclear weapons that they had came up with but the USSR didn't want them to invade Cuba. So the USSR got rid of the missiles they were going to use to bomb the US so that the US would invade Cuba.

Nikita Khrushchev:
Definition: He was the leader of the Soviet Union also known as the USSR when the Cold war was happening. He was the leader of the USSR since 1953 and stopped at 1964. Khrushchev was the leader after Stalin.

Mikhail Gorbachev:
Definition: He was another leader of the Soviet Union. Mikhail tried to overcome and solve all the problems of the Soviet Union. Such as economic problems and issues like that. He was part of the Soviet Union on 1985 and stopped once it collapsed in 1991. He came up with the economic program of Perestroika in 1987.

Deng Xiaoping:
Definition: He was a reformist leader of the People's Republic of China from the years 1976 to 1997. He implied the communist government to China and said it would help the economic market.

Perestroika/glasnost:
Definition: The actual meaning of Perestroika was reconstruction or rebuilding. While Glasnost meant openness. With these two terms in mind Mikhail Gorbachev came up with an organization in 1987 were he passed the openness policy. This openness policy was a policy that would allow people have more freedom in general. Just like the freedom to express one's culture and the government to end censorship.
